Gery L. Deer  grew up on a farm outside Jamestown, Ohio. His body of writing work goes back to 1987 as a part-time staff writer with his college newspaper. Within six months, he was offered the Features Editor position and the following year he was promoted to Senior Editor. During that time he served as the spokesperson for the paper and its staff representing the free speech rights to school administrators and helping to protect student rights through the power of the pen. Since that time he has worked for publications such as Dayton Daily News, Springfield News Sun,  Xenia Daily Gazette, the Oregon Computer Journal, Associated Content, GLD Enterprises & Productions Media, Women's News & Views publications in Ohio, and many others.

From April 2008 until January 2009, Gery served as the Features and Special Sections Editor for the Times Community Newspapers  (See samples below). Times consist of 8 newspapers in the I-75 newspaper group of the Brown Publishing Company in Dayton, Ohio. He is also a featured opinion columnist in the Centerville-Bellbrook Times, Kettering-Oakwood Times, Beavercreek News Current, Englewood Independent, and the Huber Heights Courier. In addition, his weekly op-ed column was recently picked up by both the Times Community Newspapers and the Greene County Dailies - daily publications in Fairborn and Xenia, Ohio.

Gery's personal technology column, "Techno-Babble," has been featured in several local and national publications and online at various technology sites since 1998. The column offers readers information and how-to advice about home technology and computer topics.

His current column, DEER IN HEADLINES, is self-syndicated and appears weekly in various online publications and print newspapers including the Greene County Dailies. The op-ed column focuses on politics, every day life, and various challenges facing today's Americans.

Gery is a contributing writer for many publications around the country. He has been as a columnist and Features & Special Sections Editor for Brown Publishing's Times Community Newspapers including "Your Home," the weekly real estate and home life publication, and "MPG" the automotive section. Gery was the designer and developer of the new look and content for these publications.

Gery was the principal designer and developer of the Your Home and MPG publications for Brown.

Gery also provides publicity, special publications, and web content for three companies including GLD Enterprises & Productions, Deer Computer Consulting, Ltd., the Ohio Western Arts Foundation, and The Whip Artistry Studio. He currently writes all media publications for all of these businesses as well as promotional material for his entertainment group and personal endeavors.

Career

He has had a long and colorful career in farming, engineering, computer science, database development, sales, the performing arts, marketing, and writing. Diversity in making a livelihood from his various interests and skills has become his career but he's no 'jack of all trades.' His unique approach to marketing and a diverse career makes him the ideal writer and speaker on subjects like science, technology, business, entertainment, guerrilla marketing, managing non-traditional occupations, and more. He has worked for such major companies as Standard Register, IBM, Nationwide Financial, NBC Television, Universal Studios, and more.

In 1998 Gery opened The Whip Artistry Studio as a way to offer year-round whip artistry education. To date, it is the only facility dedicated to the whip arts in the United States. Under his direction, his performance company, GLD Enterprises & Productions, has produced variety shows, western arts conventions, and charity events throughout Ohio.

In 2006, Gery was named International Advisor on the Whip by the World Stunt Association and inducted into the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame in 2007 as Wild West Performer of the Year. His whip artistry performances have been featured around the country on stage and on national television programs like the WB network's "Steve Harvey's Big Time Challenge," and NBC's "America's Got Talent." He is also the founder and executive educational coordinator of the Society of American Whip Artistry , the only existing professional organization for whip artists.

Currently Gery serves as the President for the Greater Dayton Professionals chapter of Business Network International (BNI) and the vice-chair of the Xenia Area Young Professionals, part of the local chamber of commerce.

Personal Interests

Combining his love of the arts with his interest in local history, Gery served as a trustee for the Jamestown Area Historical Society in his home town from 2000 to 2003. In 2002, he wrote, produced, and performed in a stage variety show to raise money for the renovation of the town Opera House. The event raised more than $14,000 through tickets and donations to the "Raise the Roof" event designed to kick off the building's restoration. Gery is also a Writers Guild of America East Registered Screen Writer.

One of Gery's favorite writing subjects focuses on his second love - whip artistry. In addition to performing behind a piano, Gery has been on stage with a bullwhip performing and teaching since college. He holds several international whip speed and accuracy competition titles and is currently working towards two world records. His 2003 article, Whips As Practical Weapons, was printed in 8 countries and served as the basis for presentations at the 2007 Indie Gathering independent film conference, and the Ohio Theatre Alliance conferences in 2003 and 2007.
