Bio

Gery L. Deer  grew up on a farm outside Jamestown, Ohio. He has had a long and colorful career in farming, engineering, computer science, database development, sales, the performing arts, marketing, and writing. His writing career began in college where he served as staff writer, features editor, and senior editor for his college newspaper. After attending Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio and Ohio University in Athens, he discovered that a 'regular job' as a mechanical engineering technologist was just not what he'd hoped it would be. So, he continued writing both for local papers and for pleasure. In 1991, he self-published a Christmas story about his family called A Special Place At A Special Time.

Gery’s writing has been featured in regional and national publications around the US including Cox Media Ohio Marketing Publications, Xenia Daily Gazette, The Women's News & Views, and the Oregon Computer Journal. His writing focuses mainly on business profiles, technology, and self-help related topics.

One of his favorite writing subjects, however, focuses on his second love - whip artistry. His 2003 article, Whips As Practical Weapons, was printed in 8 countries and served as the basis for presentations at the 2007 Indie Gathering independent film conference, and the Ohio Theatre Alliance conferences in 2003 and 2007.

Diversity in making a livelihood from his various interests and skills has become his career but he's no 'jack of all trades.' Gery has owned and operated three successful businesses including Deer Computer Consulting, Ltd. and GLD Enterprises & Productions. His unique approach to marketing and a diverse career makes him the ideal speaker on subjects like guerrilla marketing, managing an unusual occupation, and more.

In 1998 Gery opened The Whip Artistry Studio as a way to offer year-round whip artistry education. To date, it is the only facility dedicated to the whip arts in the United States. Under his direction, his performance company, GLD Enterprises & Productions, has produced variety shows, western arts conventions, and charity events throughout Ohio.

In 2006, Gery was named International Advisor on the Whip by the World Stunt Association and inducted into the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame in 2007 as Wild West Performer of the Year. His whip artistry performances have been featured around the country on stage and on national television programs like the WB network's "Steve Harvey's Big Time Challenge," and NBC's "America's Got Talent."

Currently Gery serves as the Educational Coordinator for the Greater Dayton Professionals chapter of Business Network International (BNI) and the vice-chair of the Xenia Area Young Professionals, part of the local chamber of commerce. He is also the founder and executive educational coordinator of the Society of American Whip Artistry , the only existing professional organization for whip artists. The organization provides certification and a professional credential to those whip artists who work professionally either as performers or instructors.
